President George thought a lot about manure, too. He shared his thoughts with other Founding Fathers, including Thomas Jefferson.

A Mr. Bartrand, a famous Agriculturalist . . . put into my hands a few days ago several papers . . . on the Subject of Manuring and vegitation. . . . Nothing, is more wanting in this Country, than a thorough knowledge of the first. (April 1794)

His composting experiments grew larger when he designed a building called a stercorary, or dung house. Located by the stables, it was long and narrow and had open sides to allow air and odor to flow in and out. He told his farm manager:

. . . let others rake, and scrape up all the trash, of every sort and kind about the houses, and in holes and corners, and throw it (all I mean that will make dung) into the Stercorary . . . (1796)
